FULFILLING THE STANDARD EN 50545-1

BRIEF NOTES TO THE EUROPEAN STANDARD EN 50545-1

In 2015, the European Union introduced a specific standard for the detection of toxic gases, namely CO and NO2, in car parks and tunnels.

This standard specifies requirements for remote gas detectors and control panels with the scope to create a Harmonised Standard acceptable by all the EU Countries.

There was an ambitious intent behind the long work of the Technical Committee who drew the lines of this standard:

From one side, the scope was aimed at increasing the safety of gas detection systems in car parks and prevent from inadequate or unsafe systems to be used or installed. Alarm thresholds have been defined considering the occupational exposure limits in a way that it won’t be any more permitted to set unsafe thresholds just because the accuracy of the gas detectors doesn’t allow low ppm values to be detected.

CO thresholds will be set at 30 ppm as Alarm 1, 60 ppm as Alarm 2 and 150 ppm as Alarm 3

NO2 thresholds will be set at 3 ppm as Alarm 1, 6 ppm as Alarm 2 and 15 ppm as Alarm 3.

The other scope of this standard was to stress the important of creating a system respectful of the energy saving policies the EU committed to.

Energy saving is a fact that nobody can ignore any longer and the large waste of energy done by ongoing ventilation systems in car parks was a key point this new standard undertook to survey.

To reach this goal, it was decided to adopt time weighted averages (TWA) before triggering alarms. Thresholds 1 and 2 will trigger an alarm if the alarm condition is not restored in 15 minutes, while, for Alarm 3, ventilation will be triggered in a time interval between 1 to 5 minutes.

In the light of complying with the Standard, Sensitron designed a new innovative system combining the new MULTISCAN++ Park control panel and the SMART-P toxic gas detectors. The system guarantees the full compliance to this standard allowing time weighted alarm thresholds.

The specific software complies with EN 50271.

SMART3 NC

Gas detectors series SMART3 NC have been designed to offer cost effective products with Hi-Tech professional features for car parks and non-classified areas.

Available for Methane, LPG, Petrol Vapours, CO, NO2 and CO2, these detectors employ a professional catalytic sensor for flammable gas detection, an electrochemical cell for CO and an infrared sensor for the CO2 detection.

The SMART3 NC provide an analog 4-20 mA output signal and can be implemented with additional features to allow the instrument to have an RS485 communication or three-relay output.

SMART3 NC gas detectors are rated to IP55.

SMART P
SMART P-1

Designed to fulfil the new European Standard for gas detection in car parks, the SMART P-1 gas detectors provide a serial RS485.

The SMART P-1 employ electrochemical cells for the detection of CO or NO2. Certified to be in compliance with EN 50545-1 along with MULTISCAN++PK panels

SMART P-2

Designed to fulfil the new European Standard for gas detection in car parks, the SMART P-2 gas detectors offer the simultaneous detection of CO and NO2 or Petrol vapours integrated in the same detector.

MULTISCAN++PARK

The gas detection system for car parks SPS consists of MULTISCAN++Park control panels and SMART-P gas detectors, purposely designed to satisfy the European norm EN 50545-1.

The MULTISCAN++Park control panels can manage and monitor up to 256 gas detectors, but it can be customized to the various requests and needs of the field as per the table here below.

MULTISCAN++PK gas control panel. 1 x RS485 type open bus line. 8 addressable gas detectors daisy chained to the RS485 control panel’s loops and 4 x 4-20 mA inputs on-board the panel. 5 relay outputs and additional 16 via remote STG/OUT16S card. The panel comes complete with 1 USB port for PC connection. Housed in plastic box for din-rail mounting
